DETOXIFICATION

Our bodies are constantly bombarded with an alarmingly high amount of disease-causing materials from within our environment and especially from the food that we consume. Our bodily systems are specifically designed to handle these toxins in a variety of ways. The human liver is a perfect example of an organ that supports detoxification. In a healthy state, our liver quietly goes about its daily business of “detoxifying,” a process in which every ounce of our blood continues to filter through the organ to be cleansed and freed from harmful substances.

The neutralization of free radical toxins is another example of our body’s natural ability to keep us protected. If we can ingest adequate amounts of antioxidant-rich foods, these free radicals, which have the potential to attack us from within, are instead rendered harmless, hence neutralized. Sadly, most of us consume nowhere near enough antioxidant-rich foods to disable these toxins.

Additionally, the daily elimination of waste material through breathing, sweating, urinating and defecation is probably the best known example of “cleaning the house.” Ideally, we strive to live a life that is as free of toxic materials as possible so that our bodies can properly cleanse themselves. After intensely studying the human system, its workings and routines, we learn that our bodies are clearly designed to do so, always aiming at the highest reachable point of health.

However, this is no easy task, when on a daily basis, we choose to ingest chemically-laden, processed, nutrient-deprived imitations of food that are not designed to nurture mental and physical well-being. We fry, bake, boil, sauté, grill and otherwise destroy the enzymes and nutrients found in live foods that are capable of keeping us in a state of overall good health. Living this modern, ‘civilized’, way of life can often lead to developing chronic diseases, cancers and rampant obesity as our bodies constantly and most desperately try to deal with toxic overload. Detox methods such as fasting, can allow your body a brief vacation from the daily energy-depleting process of digestion. These necessary breaks can further ensure that energy is redirected towards detoxification and healing - the perfect way to start your journey to optimal health.
