IMMUNITY
Our immune system includes a network of cells, tissues and organs that work together to defend the body against attacks by microscopic bacteria, pathogens and toxins. We are at all times exposed to various threatening organisms. But whether an encounter leads to disease/infection or fortified health is largely determined by the integrity of our body’s immune system. While it is relatively normal for a weakened body to ‘catch’ a cold or flu, the problem lies in the increase of vulnerability. A flu means that we are exposed to more pathogens and have an array of lifestyle factors that disrupt homeostasis. All of this means that we need to make sure our immune system is working effectively to avoid chronic or recurring illness. The imminent question here is: How can we build and support a strong immune system?
For our immune system to function properly, we need a lot of important nutrients that we can only obtain through proper nutritious foods as well as the sun and other factors are also involved. All nutrients are essential and no nutrient is more important than the other. However, the following four nutrients are a good basis and absolutely necessary for a healthy immune system and these are also nutrients people around the world, but especially, in northern parts tend to lack most frequently.
1. Vitamin D. This is a very important nutrient required by the body and all it’s processes and it’s not the only one, we need all the sun nutrients. . We need at least 50 ng/ml in our cells.
2. Iodine. It is not only essential for the thyroid but also for the whole hormonal system. Every cell in our body needs iodine, for cognitive processes, energy metabolism, nerve functions, skin preservation etc.
3. B-Vitamins and especially B12. Too many people are deficient in B-Vitamins and need to look for reliable sources. B12 is besides the immunological functions vital for all cell functions, formation of red blood cells, dna/rna, myelin sheath etc.
4. Selenium. Last but by no means least, our selenium-depleted soils cannot provide us with the mineral that is vital for our immune systems.
If our environments and or foods cannot help to provide us with these nutrients among many others, it may become necessary to supplement our diets. We can provide advice and guidance as the right paths to explore in terms of supplementation tailored directly to your needs and deficiencies.
